Theater-based techniques to improve public speaking skills

Course description:

Public speaking and presentation skills are crucial for captivating and maintaining the attention and interest of learners.

In this course, teachers, trainers, education staff, speakers, actors and other professionals can learn theater-inspired basic tools to exercise and optimize their voice, intonation and body language. Through a hands-on approach, the participants will practice and master public speaking techniques such as breathing, linguistic articulation, vocalizing etc. Through role-playing and simulations, the participants will improve their phonetic competences, scenic presence and narrative abilities. The end results of this public speaking training is to learn how to make the audience not only to listen passively, but feel surrounded, wrapped by the voice of the speaker.

Furthermore, in this course you will learn simple and easy techniques that you can afterwards not only apply in class but also teach to your learners.

Objectives:

Get an introduction to the vocal apparatus, its parts, as well as the process of producing the voice and the characteristics of the voice (pitch, tone etc.)

Get aware of the triggering and favoring factors that can cause problems in the voice.

Learn correct body position when public speaking.

Get insights on relaxation techniques and the proper way to breathe while speaking in public.

Emission, projection and vocal coordination.

Learn vocalization exercises.

Learn how to adapt our speech, with the right tone, volume and pronunciation to make ourselves understood better.

Acquire knowledge on how to care and preserve our voice when speaking in public for many hours (vocal hygiene and vocal care).

Get inspired on how to encourage a stimulating and open learning environment and foster collective learning.

Training activities:

Day 1 – BREATHING

  • Breathing is the basis of good phonation. If you only breathe with your chest or your abdomen, you do not suck up enough air, which leads to savings and therefore the larynx closes, distorts the voice and prevents emission. Day 2 – SCENIC PRESENCE. The fear of speaking and expressing ideas in public.

Scenic fear is an inhibitory state that causes a loss of effectiveness in verbal communication and limits our ability to express ourselves clearly. We will practice unlocking techniques, developing self-esteem and energetic and emotional channeling to manage the fear of speaking in public, which reduces or eliminates anxiety.

Day 3 – PROJECTION OF THE VOICE. Vocalization and diction

To project something means throwing or throwing from a distance. When projecting the voice, the sound must arrive naturally to all the learners in the class, implying the use of its resonance cavities; the expiratory impulse and the elimination of unnecessary tensions.

We will learn techniques of vocal projection, articulation of words and correct diction, which refers to the global form of language expression.

Day 4 – POSTURE. Body Relaxation. The Voice in movement.

  • In the correct sound emission, in addition to the vocal cords, the whole body vibrates, and projects your personality. We will learn techniques for the management of tension and posture, which facilitate the projection, the reach and power of the voice, the relaxation of organs of speech, deep breathing and air / voice performance. Day 5 –Networking and closing

  • Energizer and team-building exercises
  • Group dynamics: Networking skills
  • Open discussion on possible future collaborations and planning follow up activities
  • Summary of key learning points
  • Final course evaluation and feedback
  • Validation of learning outcomes and handling certificates
  • Cultural activity or guided visit (optional)

Methodology

Methodology:

We tailor our working methods based upon the participants‘ needs and professional profiles in order to ensure easier adaptability and application of the tools to the real life.

Our standard methodology is based on active learning and it is highly participative and practical. We have a hands on approach that comprises group exercises, role plays, experiments, case studies and simulation exercises. We use collaborative learning techniques to foster the exchange of good practices and collective learning.

The pedagogical methods used in this training course are based on experiential learning and learning by doing, Inquiry Based Learning and art-based teaching. Our focus is on showing the participants how the learners’ motivation increases when they become the actors of their own learning because the teacher takes the role of facilitator or learning guide. Thus, the participants get the chance to experience on themselves the benefits of the active learning methodology at the same time as learning how to apply it in their classroom.

Energizers, games and group dynamics are foreseen daily in order to ensure a positive energy and a cooperative learning climate in the group.

Group reflections and daily brief feedback sessions are planned to help adapting the learning programme to the specific needs of the participants.

We organize optional social and cultural activities in order to give the participants the opportunity to get to know the Canarian and Spanish culture as well as to do some professional networking and exchange good practices.
