Logistics
- Where will the course take place?
Usually our courses take place in the metropolitan area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristobal de La Laguna, Bajamar or Punta del Hidalgo which are all at 30 – 40min distance. However, this might vary for certain courses, so please write us an email.
- Which is the closest airport?
You can choose any of the two airports in Tenerife as they are both very well connected to the metropolitan area.
Tenerife North Airport (TFN):
The airport on the North is located near La Laguna city. It is mainly used for domestic flights between islands and to/from the mainland. There are direct bus lines to “Intercambiador de San Cristóbal de La Laguna” and Santa Cruz (Bus 020) or Puerto de La Cruz (Bus 030). A taxi is around 25-30€.
Tenerife South Airport (TFS):The international airport of Tenerife is in the south of the island, around 60km away from Santa Cruz deTenerife, the capital. There is Public transport (Bus) that can take you easily to Santa Cruz/La Laguna from the south.
Taking a taxi could be around 70-90€, and there are always some outside of the Airport, they all have the same price.
There are also public bus lines (Lines 010/day or 711/night), you just would have to hop out at the Main bus station in Santa Cruz (Intercambiador) and hop on the line/tram that takes you near to your accommodation or onto a taxi.
NOTE: Please note that this information has been updated in January 2024, so check if it is still valid at the time of your trip.
- Which hotel do you recommend?
We generally only arrange accommodation and meals for big groups applying to tailor-made courses. The prices depend on the time of the year.
If you are not a big group, please contact us at info[@]tenerifecourses.com for hotel recommendations according to the course location.
- How does the public transportation work in Tenerife?
The best way to use public buses & tramways is to buy a rechargeable physical bus card: “TÍTULO MONEDERO”. You can get it straight from the airport. You will have to check in when accessing the bus and check out when leaving (check out just for the non turistic cards =24h/7day cards).
Recharge it at: the airports, main bus stations (“intercambiador”), tramway stops, shops… All places in this map.
For the bus card you have 3 options, the 24h card, the 7 day card and the Bono Monedero (rechargeable card).
Rechargeable card: you charge the amount you want (multiples of 5€) and you can use it in tram and bus. When entering the tram, by bringing the card close to the lower part of the validation machine located at the entrances, or when entering the bus, by bringing it close to the lower part of the validation machine next to the driver. On the buses, it is compulsory to validate both at the entrance and exit. If you validate at the exit, you will only be charged for the journey made and not for the entire journey of the line. In the bus, if you don’t have enough balance you can pay the rest in cash, in the tram you won’t be able to validate and will have to recharge the card.
The 7 day /24 hours cards are personal, so you pay 52€/12€ (2 for the card and 50€/10€ for the unlimited rides)
It makes sense to buy the 24h or 7 day card only if you plan to make several visits in other locations outside of Santa Cruz or La Laguna, as in the metropolitan area the tickets are very economical, around 1 euro per trip. The further you go, the more expensive the ticket is.
When you’re at a bus stop, to know exactly when the next bus is coming:
Scan the QR-code or write the stop number in that webpage: https://titsa.com/index.php/en/your-buses/your-next-bus.
IMPORTANT: When at a bus stop you have to wave to the driver for him to stop. If not, they might not stop if they don’t have a passenger inside who wants to get off.
- What if I want to rent a car?
If you plan to rent a car we recommend that you rent the car from the rental company web and not from other webs to avoid third parties if something happens during the rental.
Comparison websites, like Pepecar, should just help you to compare prices.
Cicar, Top car, Gold car, Auto riesen, Pluscar are among the most common companies.
NOTE: The main roads are safe and good, but some roads are quite steep or full of curves (mountainous landscape).
IMPORTANT: Do not leave valuable items visible from the outside. Tenerife is a generally safe island, but thieves can be found everywhere (and attractions and viewpoints where there are many tourists are more tempting). - Do you arrange common meals or transport?
In some courses such as the course on Outdoor education, we usually arrange common lunch and private transportation at extra cost for the days when the course takes place in nature (Teide National Park or Anaga Ancient forest). The common bus is due to various reasons: sustainability, sharing of information during the route, road complications and parking difficulties. The activities in Teide and Anaga consist of stopping in various points where there will be explanations and practical activities.
The extra costs for lunches and local transport are to be paid from your individual support grant that is dedicated for accommodation, meals and local transport.
- How is the weather in Tenerife?
Tenerife has many micro-climates. Even within a 10km distance, the temperatures can vary considerably, from 20-35 degrees on the coast to 15-20 degrees in the city/nature, and as low as 0-10 degrees in the National park (at over 2000m altitude).
You might need summer clothes and swimming suits (if you want to enjoy and go to the beach!), but also warmer clothes, jackets, and comfortable shoes (if you want to visit the mountains and forests at different altitudes).
You can check the official weather on http://www.aemet.es/en
For the course activities, you can choose semi-formal clothing and comfortable shoes.
- What can I visit during my stay in Tenerife?
Before each training course, we usually create a Whatsapp group with all participants, where we will inform you about the different possibilities of visits and activities in Tenerife. This will allow you to discuss with other participants, arrange car sharing etc.
- Do you recommend any restaurants or cafeterias?
Upon request, we can provide recommendations for local restaurants and cafes depending on the area you are accommodated and the overall schedule of the week.
- What food and souvenirs do you recommend?
MOJO: Red or green Mojo sauce: It’s best to buy freshly-made mojo, although various companies sell it in jars with more than acceptable results.
CHEESE: Fresh goat’s milk cheese is the most popular on the island (it’s used to make delicious fried cheese). You will also find smoked and cured cheese; and mixes of sheep /goat/ cow’s milk cheese, etc.
ALMOGROTE: For the cheese lovers! Almogrote is a soft paste made from hard cheese, peppers, olive oil and garlic. Typically eaten spread on toast, it can also be used to cook different dishes. It is originally from La Gomera island.
WINE: Tenerife boasts a rich tradition of winemaking, cultivating unique grape varieties in its volcanic soil. The island’s wines offer a distinctive flavour profile influenced by its terrain and climate, making Tenerife a captivating destination for wine enthusiasts.
BIENMESABE: A paste made from almonds, honey, sponge fingers and lemon – a great topping for all types of desserts and can also be bought pre-made in jars.
ALOE VERA: This plant is widely cultivated in the Canary islands. It requires very little care and is also known for its therapeutic properties.
- Recommendations and good practices
- THROW TOILET PAPER IN THE BIN, please.
To avoid the obstruction of pipes or not contaminating the water, it’s recommended to put toilet paper in the bin, instead of flushing it down in the toilet.
- Tap water in Tenerife is drinkable.
Bring your own refilled bottle with you to avoid plastic waste. During the course you will have a chance to refill
- Remember about sun protection!
Hat, sun cream and staying hydrated are important because the ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the Canary Islands is very high.
- Collecting rocks from protected areas and exporting them from the island is prohibited.
However, you can purchase these unique rocks in select shops due to their captivating shape, colour, and weight.
- Be cautious when swimming!
Ocean currents are powerful and unpredictable. Avoid risk in unfamiliar spots. Tenerife’s town beaches often have experienced lifeguards who know ocean safety well.
